I arrived home in sunny Invercargill yesterday to the news that my mother-in-law is in hospital again. Grant’s off to Alexandra today to see how things are with her: she’s still waiting for surgery to replace her failing heart valve and getting sicker by the day.
It’s a bit of a Catch-22 situation, she has become sick enough that they doctors are saying she needs the operation ASAP but because she’s so sick now they aren’t sure if she’s up to it.
What is so incredibly frustrating about it all is that her health problems bring about the same result as mother’s did: respiratory failure. In my mother’s case, they could do nothing to fix things and we had to watch her life fade away. In my mother-in-law’s case, there is a fix. I just hope they haven’t left it too late.
I guess I’m lucky…I’ve heard the awful mother-in-law stories, but I scored myself a good one.
