Maps and (big) monkeys

(This is the Online column, written for The Southland Times)

The AA’s new online travel and mapping service has proved so popular that the site has been knocked over in the rush. According to AA brand manager Mark Williams, AA SmartMap was designed to handle hundreds of inquiries at once but the site has been overwhelmed after being bombarded by travel-hungry kiwis.

For the record, AA SmartMap is free and offers data and mapping information covering everything from accommodation and restaurants to landmarks, ATM sites and loos — just what you need with the Christmas holidays looming up.

King Kong

Now for the big monkey: If you’re a Telecom Mobile customer, you can get a pre-Christmas crack at Skull Island.

Through an agreement with Universal Studios’ Consumer Products Group and Gameloft, Telecom 027 customers with compatible handsets can exclusively buy and download King Kong: The Official Mobile Game of the Movie, from December 1 until the end of January.

Peter Jackson’s King Kong will be in theatres on December 14.

Along with the game, other mobile content from the movie is available to Telecom 027 customers until the end of January — including caller tunes, wallpapers, screen savers and movie clips.

That’s it for this week. In the words of the inimitable Lauren Bacall: “You remember how to whistle don’t you? Just put your lips together … and blow.”

To that sentiment, I’d like to add: But not with a mouth full of tea.
