Ahoy maties, time to brush up pirating skills

(This is the Online column, written for The Southland Times)

Now that I’ve been to the movies to see the latest adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, I’m feeling a bit of a compulsion to bung a parrot on my shoulder and start talking like a pirate, me hearties.

I’ve been brushing up on my pirate-speech skills and am pretty sure I’ll be ready to rock ‘n’ roll on International Speak Like a Pirate Day next month (https://www.talklikeapirateday.com/ and https://www.talklikeapirate.com/).

Shiver me timbers, I just can’t wait.

Of course, the lovely Captain Jack isn’t the only pirate of note to entertain us recently — there’s also Patchy the Pirate of Spongebob Squarepants fame.

Staunch fans of this truly classic piece of televisual drama will, of course, know that the part of Patchy is played by Tom Kenny the same actor who provides the voice for Spongebob himself.

Ahoy there maties, that’s one talented pirate.

To get a handle on phone etiquette ahead of Talk Like A Pirate Day, point your browser here (you might like to take notes).

I’m still looking for a fresh pirate joke (where do you find your buccaneers is starting to lose its shine) but apart from that, I think I’m ready for action on the day.

PS: If you want to know more about the history of Spongebob Squarepants, including the controversial episodes, Wikipedia is your friend.
