Style file for imbeciles

(This is the Online column, written for The Southland Times)

Gather round, fashion victims, after last week’s rant about mullets it’s time for Style for Dummies.

If, like me, you’re about as in touch with trends as Michael Jackson is with reality, you’ll find the net offers a wealth of information.

To keep up with what’s happening in the world of New Zealand fashion, and what you should and shouldn’t be wearing, FashioNZ is the site to see. You’ll find info on the top Kiwi designers, retailers and more but the site’s navigation isn’t particularly user-friendly.

If you want to stay one step ahead of the local fashion scene by keeping up with overseas trends, there’s Fashion Icon and Fashion Planet.

Or how about iVillage, which bills itself as the internet for women and has all the girly stuff you’d find in any sheila’s magazine. One of the most interesting features on the site is the Makeover-O-Matic, where you can upload a photo of yourself and see how you’d look with a change of style.

A new shade of lippy, perhaps. Or a mullet, if that’s what floats your boat. Or even the Helen Clark pudding bowl haircut.

For the blokes out there, a list of tips for men at Free Beauty Tips suggests trimming armpit hairs in warmer weather.

You could always wax them, I suppose. If you like that kind of thing. Ouch.

It’s also important for our four-legged family members to look their best, and the Community Animal Welfare Society has a rundown of how to best groom your pet.

Apologies to goldfish owners, the info is probably best suited to a dog, or at a pinch, a cat.
